wxPython Unicode Support

wxWidgets and wxPython can be built to use either ANSI or Unicode strings. This demo shows how Unicode can be used to support text in many different languages using one locale when Unicode is enabled.

So what is the difference between the ANSI and Unicode builds?

If ANSI is used, Python strings (bytes) are always used, and you can only display strings that use either the ASCII encoding, or the system's default encoding. Any attempt to display other strings will result in garbled characters.

When unicode is enabled, then all functions and methods in wxPython that return a wxString will return an Python unicode object, and parameters that expect a wxString can accept either a Python string or unicode object. (NOTE: If you aren't familiar with the difference between Python strings and Unicode objects, you should view this Python Unicode Object introduction.) If a string object is passed then it will be decoded into unicode using the converter pointed to by wxConvCurrent, which will use the default system encoding. If you need to use string in some other encoding then you should convert it to unicode using the Python codecs first and then pass the unicode to the wxPython method.
